Why I Love Rupaul Drag Race

As a twenty six year old woman people are often confused when I say my favourite T.V. show is Rupauls drag race. Just the other day my friend said she had to Google what it was because she thought I was talking about a car show. However,  after watching a few episodes she was hooked. And what is there not to love? It has everything a good T.V. show needs, over the top colourful costumes, dramatic personalities and catching punch lines ( the amount of times I’ve found myself saying ‘Yasss qween’ and greeted by confused faces). There is also soul in the show, we learn about some of the queens heart breaking back stories about being an outcast and being rejected by friends and family – it can get very upsetting.

Then we have the judges panel, in the first few season there was Santino Rice, who was previously on Project Runway and Merle Ginberg who was replace by Michelle Visage who is the big boobed judge with a heart of gold. There is also Ross Mathews and Carson Kressley that add humour and advice to the queens. Finally we have the main lady herself, the fabulous Rupaul, who you can’t help but fall in love with. She has such beauty and is smart and understands the struggles of being something unique that society doesn’t understand yet.

When I first started watching Drag race I wasn’t sure what was happening. I was browsing Netflix and I fancied watching something similar to Project Runway and usually the first episode in Drag race is a sewing one. I was so enticed by the queens attitude and personas that before I knew it I was already 3 episodes in.

Drag race is not mocking or making fun of these queen. Being a drag queen is a serious profession and some of the queen go on to be real superstars. I feel we need more drag queens or just people breaking the stereotypical roles in the mainstream world – it is 2017 after all.

There have been 9 seasons and 2 all star seasons and each season seems to out do the previous (however season 6 is my all time favourite, Bianca Del Rio is my queen). I’m so excited to see what the next season brings I’m sure it will more extravagant and drama filled that ever.

If you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you gunna love somebody else?

Thank you for reading J
