Benefit of Chocolate

One of my biggest weaknesses in life is my inability to say no to chocolate. I will eat chocolate in any form, be it cake or mousses or cookies the list could go on and on. On Christmas day as I lay in a chocolate coma from way to much over indulging I was thinking to myself next year I will be the healthiest I have ever been but the thought of no chocolate what so ever feels me absolute dread (sad I know but I reeeeeeally love chocolate) so for the past few weeks I’ve been doing a bit of research on the benefits of all type of chocolate (not just dark chocolate) and how to have it as part of a balanced diet.

Milk Chocolate

My favourite type of chocolate. This is the most popular choice when choosing a chocolate to eat as it is nice and creamy and there are so many different varieties to choose from and doesn’t leave a bitter taste in your mouth. There are many advantages to milk chocolate, one of them being is that it reduces stress (which is perfect for me) it also is proven to improve your mood. Another advantage is that it is high in antioxidants so it helps to keep your skin glowing. Chocolate that has a high ratio of milk in it is also good to keep your bones strong.

White Chocolate

When I first started researching chocolate for this post I had no intention of adding a category for white chocolate (I honestly thought milk and white were exactly the same just different colours, very silly I know) but white chocolate can be very beneficial. First of, it is completely free of caffeine and, like milk chocolate, it is full of antioxidants which helps with reducing ageing and to lower high blood pressure. White chocolate also contains magnesium and potassium which helps muscle contraction and energy production as well as containing B and D vitamins.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate, the healthiest of them all but not always everyone’s favourite. However, after reading all the amazing benefits it has to offer I am seriously considering trying to replace my daily milk chocolate fix to dark chocolate.
It is full of vitamins and minerals, it contains fibre, Iron, Copper, magnesium and many other vitamins. It has been known to help improve many risk factors for heart disease and it may even lower the risk of cardio vascular disease, it helps to improve brain function as well as lower body mass.
If buying chocolate, I think the better the quality the better the benefits. I think factors that that make dark chocolate quality is that it is organic and with a 70% cocoa content or higher.

There are also disadvantages to chocolate. Consuming too much can lead to weight gain as it can have a high calorie content and be high in sugar so it could be damaging to your teeth as well as your blood sugar.

Overall, I do think chocolate can be very beneficial to your health if consumed in moderation, the recommended intake a day is 6.7 grams (which is roughly half a bar). So as much as I would like to be eating, morning, noon and night. I’m happy yo have a small chocolate fix everyday as part of a healthy diet.

Book Review - Goodnight Lady by Martina Cole

Goodnight Lady is one of my all time favourite books. I have read it time and time again. I actually borrowed the book from my nan when I was in my teens because I wanted some more grown up to read. I don’t think I could have chosen a more grown up book if I tried.

Goodnight Lady was written by Martina Cole and published in 1994. It is based in London and follows the story of Briony Cavanagh. We follow her from a very poor childhood and being sold for sex by her dad to one of the most feared and loved madams in the east end.
Once I started reading Goodnight Lady I couldn’t put it down. It is a gritty novel that includes violence and gangsters in the thirties through to the fifties. The characters are really thought out and I do love a string female lead especially as she is a businesswoman who is in the industry of prostitution.

I do feel that we go on a journey through Briony’s life and we feel everything she is feeling. We meet Tommy Lane, Brionys partner and one true love who helped her set up the business and finally ending up together. We go the trauma of Brionys sister, who was severely affected by her past abuse, becoming pregnant and having twins that Briony raises. We also learn about her other sisters and her parents, there are real strong family values that are very heart warming and all the characters are lovable in their own way.
What I think is really great about this book us that nothing is sugar coated. There are some graphic scenes, for example, there is a scene of a back alley abortion, in the book that could be disturbing and not for the faint hearted.

I really love Martina Cole’s style of writing. She sets the scene so well you feel like you are there and there has been many time were I’ve completely lost myself in her books. You can tell Cole is passionate about what she does and she is an amazing storyteller.

I hope I haven’t given the plot away too much because I feel everyone should read it (just a warning it is 800 pages) or any Martina Cole book, as they are an enjoyable read in my opinion.

Nail Polish Review

Recently I have been trying to find the perfect nail polish. I have always been a follower of Rimmel but with so many types of polish (gel, matt) and colours and prices, I thought I’d do a little review of the polishes I’ve recently tried.

First is Barry M matte Nail Polish in 02 Crush from Superdrug at £3.99.

I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t really understand the matt looking effect, I thought that was just another term used to say how the polish applies to the nail. When I put the first coat on it looked really good, it had a nice even distribution but it would defiantly need two coats. I was amazed at how fast it dried by the time I had finished my last nail I could go straight into painted the next coat. The polish lasted 2 days before the first chip appeared but overall it held on really well.

Next polish I bought was Avon Gel Shine in shade Red Velvet.

This was one of the cheapest polishes I bought (it was on sale – 7.00 down to 2.50). I was really excited to try a gel polish as I heard that it was one of the betters ones but because it was reduced so much I did question just how good it will be.
Oh my goodness let me first say I was wrong - there was no need for me to question the polish, it was so easy to apply, I could have actually settled with one coat but I did apply two. It looked so professional and didn’t chip for nearly 3 days. I was looking on the Avon website and they have a large variety of different shades all looking really good. I think I have found my new favourite.

The last polished I tried was by Nails Inc in shade Basil Street from at £11.

The most expensive polish I bought. The packaging was nice and sleek and the brush was thin which was nice as you can be more precise. By far the best brush of all the polishes. I really loved the colour as it looked like a rich toffee – perfect for everyday. It did apply evenly and took 2 coats, could have probably done with 3 as the layers were still slightly see – through but it looked amazing once dried.
However within a day it had chipped so badly I ended up re – painting one of my nails that evening. For the price I was expecting something much more professional but I can’t fault the colour and the how excellent the brush was.

Overall I most defiantly preferred Avon. It ticked all the boxes and it was a really good price. I just hope they are still available for me to buy.

My Notebook Collection

For years I have been obsessed with notebooks and pens and anything stationary related. There are some lovely journals/ notebooks out there and, if you are like me, buying just one notebook is not enough. So I thought I’d share all my recent notebook purchases.

First we have this adorable set of 3 small notebooks from next for £4.99. They only measure 10cm wide and are thinly ruled. I always have one of these in my handbag just in case. I think these were last season so I’ll have to check out if next has brought out a new design to add to my collection.

House of Hackney Set of 3 Notebooks – Okay I am missing a notebook which I left on the train (I hope somebody is enjoying my shopping list) these were £16 from House of Hackney website. I love the design of these notebooks. It’s really fun and so different to anything I’ve seen before. It reminds me of the 1920’s art deco scene. Also just looking on their website you can get fabric in this design, it would look amazing as cushions.

This Daily Journal is from Urban Outfitter £10. This journal is perfect for anyone who want to be super organized. It has a hourly chart, sections to write your to do’s, objectives and notes. What is great about this journal is that you can fill in the time and date so it can be used whenever you like.

Next is this lovely little floral notebook from Ted baker. I bought this notebook a few years ago and I think it was £10 from John Lewis. It comes with its own little pen. It only measures 12cm high, I used this notebook when I started my new job and was taking notes. It isn’t ruled but the paper and pen are great quality.

I bought these set of 3 notebooks by Roobee in TK Maxx for £5. I actually bought them because they have lovely little motivational quotes on them and I’m a sucker for an inspiring quote. They are A5 size and ruled. I’ve filled up two of these already but I can’t bring myself to throw them away.

I love anything with skulls on, so when I saw this one in TK Maxx for £4.99 I didn’t think twice. I really like the fact that it as embroidery and beads sewn into it’s fabric cover. I haven’t used it and I’m not sure if I will because I just love looking at it (I think I’ve become too invested in these notebooks).

This super cute notebook I got from Tesco, it was on sale for £1.50. This was a total impulse buy, I don’t need anymore but it was so adorable I couldn’t say no. The insides are even cute that the outside. It is ruled really wide so perfect for leaving by the phone to take messages. I’m not sure I can bring myself to use it.

These are a few of my favourite journals from the last month. I still have so many more notebooks and while writing this I’ve just bought some more online – I think I need help.
